This month’s theme is Connect. Our creative affirmation is, “I follow my curiosity, forming new connections from the unexpected.”
Nature’s rhythms have so much to teach us. Working with each season’s energy using tools like astrology, tarot, and our own intuition can be incredibly empowering. Taking it one step further and applying it to our creativity is a practice I hope we can explore together!
(If you haven’t started working with the Creative Contemplation journal yet, it’s free. You’ll find each month’s new moon theme, affirmation, and reflection pages inside to help deepen your practice).
In celebration of the upcoming Summer Solstice and the theme of connection, this new moon letter is available to everyone, as is our New Moon Circle, June 17th at 11 am CDT (normally for paying members of Heartbeats only).

Astrological insights/Energetic themes (from the lovely Sofia!)
This year’s New Moon in Gemini takes place at 9:37 pm PST on June 17, 2023 (or in the early hours of June 18, depending on where you are in the world). Each new moon presents us with the opportunity to begin a new cycle—a “first-page” moment in some area of our lives.
This new moon is heavily influenced by some big players: Saturn stations its yearly retrograde on the same day, Neptune is squaring this transit from the sign of Pisces, and Mars and Venus are slowly coming together for a rare conjunction in Leo.
This cosmic culmination is magnetic.
Around the New Moon in Gemini, it is likely we will feel inspired by our most bizarre ideas and avant-garde projects. The best part is, there is celestial support to draw that very strange thing to you, in the material world. Gemini is anything but general, rather it's your niche, most bizarre, and soulful interests will be at the top of your mind.
Saturn turning retrograde supports you in building the blueprint for your most outlandish fantasies, especially the ones you’ve left untouched for too long. And speaking of fantasies— Neptune should provide a moment of clarity, a sudden realization of the next step or the discovery of an overlooked detail required to bring your ideals to life. With Venus and Mars about to look into each other’s eyes, we have the good fortune of our call to action and our emotional affections being on the same page.
This is a good new moon on so many fronts: creativity, family, work, and romance.
The only potential blindspot is the influence of Neptune. While he’s the bearer of clarity, he’s also the ruler of our illusions. It’s best to be clear-headed, present, and free of mind-altering substances during this transit, so you’ll be able to discern the difference between two.
There are a few ways to take advantage of this auspicious energy:
CONNECT: this is an ideal time to meet and greet in every area. Connections formed now could prove to be very significant. Gemini is the ultimate conversationalist. Don’t be shy about talking about who you are, the work you do, and what you’re looking for during this time. The New Moon is like a siren call, if you put the message out, there’s a good chance your people will hear you.
BEGIN AGAIN: A wonderful time to start or restart projects, even if those are only meaningful to you. It’s also a great transit for rekindling old friendships (with romance, I’d say it’s better to see someone new).
GAME PLAN: Mars and Venus are sextiling the Sun and Moon. This is fun, flirty, and charming energy…but it can also be fleeting. Utilize this transit to envision what the biggest vision is for your life…and then get down to business. There is always great energy available in astrology—it's up to us to see it through.
*Note: The intentions planted now will show a small milestone around the Full Moon in Capricorn on July 3. The full culmination will take place in approximately 6 months, at the Full Moon in Gemini on November 27. A six-month plan is great to begin at this time, you could still be where you want to be by the end of the year!
Creative Inspiration
As a Gemini Rising (Mariah here again), I love the bouncy, flighty, information-rich nature of this season. There’s a buoyancy to it. A gaiety and flirtatiousness with life. “What if?” and “Why not?” are rabbit holes to pursue with abandon.
Yet, it’s also a time when paradox, duality, and contradiction can become creature comforts. Rather than seeking connection, we can try to soothe the overwhelm by compartmentalizing ourselves, others, and our creativity.
“Feet, what do I need them for
If I have wings to fly.”
-Frida Kahlo
If ever there was an artist who refused to be put in a box, (even though we may try,) it’s Frida Kahlo. Her art and life reflected a refusal to be labeled, from the non-gender-conforming way she dressed to her complicated marriage. Our fascination with Frida is because of her ability to paint it all— messy, tragic, beautiful, hopeful.
“I wish I could do whatever I liked behind the curtain of “madness” Then: I’d arrange flowers, all day long, I’d paint; pain, love and tenderness, I would laugh as much as I feel like at the stupidity of others, and they would all say: “Poor thing, she’s crazy!” (Above all I would laugh at my own stupidity.) I would build my world which while I lived, would be in agreement with all the worlds. The day, or the hour, or the minute that I lived would be mine and everyone else’s - my madness would not be an escape from “reality”.”
-Frida Kahlo
Revisit some of her lesser-known work for inspiration, check out a book from the library about her life, watch the Netflix movie starring Selma Hayek, plan a trip to see her Casa Azul in Mexico City, or check out more amazing ways to explore her life and art from home!
Tarot Reading
Four of cups, clarified by the two of cups in reverse (from the Osho deck), and the Hierophant.
I love that the four of cups showed up again in this month’s reading, proving that some lessons take time to integrate. During Taurus season, it came in reverse and the message was to focus on gratitude. This time, it’s offering a different lesson.
While the character in this card is focused on what is, there’s an invitation to consider more possibilities. A plethora of them, if you will. In moments of fear, it can feel like in order to embrace change and grow, we have to leave everything from the past behind. This can cause us to go into fight or flight mode, losing our sense of safety and security. The four of cups reminds us that we can carry what we need from the past while exploring new ideas and situations. Both/and.
The two of cups in reverse reinforces the need to grow beyond an either/or mentality. While there is a beautiful connection between these two trees (you can think of them as two ideas, two sides of yourself, or two choices), the card highlights a third color created from the connection between them.
The Hierophant adds a reminder to connect to something even higher- our Spirit. Here, dualities dissolve into unity and everything is embraced. Limitations disappear as we consider the truly infinite part of our being. Information becomes wisdom. Let yourself zoom out and tap into your higher mind. What comes through may surprise, delight, and change you.

Creative Prompts
Gather some old magazines (the library usually has some for free!) and cut out various images you resonate with (you can also do this digitally, using a service like Canva). Whether they are sides of yourself you’d like to explore, goals, travel dreams, wish lists from Amazon, etc., paste them all together and see if you can make any new connections. Is there a certain color or theme you hadn’t noticed before?
Consider an area of your life that feels black and white. Maybe it’s a choice or contradiction you can’t resolve. Take inspiration from Dos Fridas and paint it, write it, or dance it. Find a way to express the opposites. Next, imagine a thread that binds them together. What is that thread?
From the Creative Contemplation journal- Allow yourself to go down all the rabbit holes this month. Which ones intrigue you the most and why? Where does your curiosity lead? Gather information, even if it feels random. Let yourself be unfocused. Keep track of the discoveries you make and create a Venn diagram, chart, graph, word cloud, etc. to see the data in a new way.
New Moon Blessing
All that I yearn for, yearns for me. May I remember what I am passionate about is exactly what my soul intended for me. No matter how niche or underground, I believe the world I want to see exists. May I live the life I am meant to live, and may I be the person I long to be.
