The Dark House
I sat, my eyes closed. Returning to that scared girl in her room, listening to her parents fight before the sun rose.
“What would that period of your life be called if it were a movie?” She probed, gently. I sat, my eyes closed. Returning to that scared girl in her room, listening to her parents’ fight before the sun rose. “The Dark House,” the name came to me easily, surprisingly.
It was one of our last tapping sessions together, an experience I’d entered with no expectations that had powerful results. How a simple question, married with compassion and love can provide relief, reveal the truth without causing more harm.
That’s the vision I’m holding for this space. A playful, creative mirror pointing the way back to yourself. Back to truth. Always with love. And grace. A soft place to land at the end of the week. A place to refuel. Refill the well. Rest. And grow.
Heartbeats can be both fast and slow. Erratic or steady. To take the pulse of something means to listen to its life force. Our heartbeats naturally have peaks and valleys. Experience waves of electricity (which is why a flatline is not a sign of life).
They can also synchronize.
A recent study reported participants listening to the same story demonstrated similar heart rates, harmonizing as they held their attention. The power of story. The power of attention, connection.
Together, let’s exercise the courage to allow more joy into our lives, not in spite of the broken, rough, painful pieces but because of them.
Once a week, on Sunday, I’ll be sharing small, meditative morsels to enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea. It may be an essay, a poem, playlist, photograph, favorite quote or recipe (because those nourish both body and soul). My hope is that this sharing is reciprocal. A potluck where everyone is welcome; all have something to offer and receive.
I’ll set the table. Bring a friend and your favorite bottle of wine. Let’s see what can happen when we synchronize our hearts.
This week’s invitation
What movie title would you give a difficult period of your life? How does naming it and viewing yourself as the main character shift your perspective?
If there’s something in this newsletter that inspires or moves you to create something, I’d love to share it! Send me an email at thebarefootbeat@gmail.com with your offering for the table.
