Surrender: New Moon in Pisces
A guide to nurturing your creativity during Pisces season
Hello.
The year I chose surrender as my word for the year, my father died and I became pregnant with Noah. The last sign of the Zodiac, the mutable sign of Pisces (Feb. 18 to March 19) is a powerful portal. It’s an invitation to enter into the unknown, knowing we will be forever changed.
Our journey of Creative Contemplation began with a spark. We then learned how to ground, connect, nurture, play, clarify, decide, plunge, emerge, scale, and breakthrough. Now, we’ve arrived at the last lesson, surrender.
Surrender is a big ask. In a culture where certainty, convenience, and control are the values most of us live by, Pisces season offers an antidote to the rigid boundaries between self, body, and spirit. While its opposite sign, Virgo, seeks the embodiment of a spiritual life, Pisces dissolves what confines and restricts our understanding of reality.
The last water sign, the quality of the New Moon in Pisces on March 10th is ethereal and soft. Like a watercolor painting, we participate in moments of surrender by allowing the lines to blur and our perceptions to shift.
This month’s affirmation is, “I call upon my ancestors and spirit helpers to show me the way.”
Feeling our way through the dark takes radical trust and faith. Through our connection to spirit, we sense beyond what can be proven. We rely on our intuition, synchronicities, and belief in our soul’s ability to lead the way.
Adaptability, expanding awareness, and communion with the collective consciousness help us enter into a state of non-resistance, initiating us into divine union and liberation.
So, what does all of this mean for our creative practices?

The Journey by Mary Oliver
I received this poem in the mail from a perfect stranger, thanks to
’s call for a poetry exchange. It came at the perfect time and when I heard Sarah read it again in her March video, I knew I wanted to share it with you.The Journey
One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice—
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do—
determined to save
the only life you could save.

Tarot Reading
The Moon is the traditional Major Arcana associated with Pisces. What’s more mutable than the moon? Its waxing and waning light give us permission to express our different modalities, all the while knowing we are always whole. It is only a trick of light and our perspective that changes.
This month, The Hierophant and Page of Cups also came through with messages.
While The Hierophant usually represents Taurus, the key takeaway for me with this card is knowing the difference between submission and surrender. Intuitively, submission connotates a relationship of inequality, even violence. Most do not willingly submit but are forced to give in through some external power dynamic.
Surrender, however, is an act of faith.
We can willingly surrender to a higher power without giving up our own. We can willingly accept circumstances beyond our control without negating our capacity to respond.
The Page of Cups is an invitation to let ourselves dream. Tap into your childhood ability to see beyond reality and run wild with your imagination, just for the fun of it. Not to “get something” from the experience and immediately turn it into a tangible object. Allow yourself to slip into the liminality of play, of timelessness and fantasy.

Creative Prompts:
Draw or imagine your portal. What does it look and feel like? Is it a bridge, a cocoon, a sweat lodge? Explore rituals for entering times of transition from other cultures. Is there one that resonates with you?
Make a list of “problems” or situations you need help with. Make an altar to your ancestors and spirit guides and place the list on the altar. Leave it there and offer a prayer of gratitude for their assistance. Let go and trust the solutions will come.
Notice when and how you get into “flow” state. What comes through you during those times? Can you make a little more room to allow yourself to surrender to the experience of creating?
New Moon Blessing
May you know that as you walk toward and through an ending, a rebirth is on the other side. May you soak in the rich waters of sacred connection, allowing the collective healing of possibility to wash over you. May you release restriction and soften into your wholeness. May you acknowledge the love that surrounds you, within and without, infusing each step with grace. May you be held by all that is, in the safe embrace of Spirit.
A special note:
This New Moon Letter is the final chapter in our first, yearlong journey of Creative Contemplation. It’s been a gift to share these letters with you and deepen my awareness of how we’re all connected—to the energy of the stars and planets, to nature, and each other.
I have a brand new season of Creative Contemplation I’ve been working on to share with you in a few weeks. There are new layers to explore, much like holding a prism to the sunlight and noticing how the colors shift. I hope you’ll join me for another year of intentionally living in harmony with the seasons, nurturing our creativity, and tending to our spirit.
